Customize Your Rivian R1T in 2024

Overview

There are just a few totally electric pickups available, but none are as rapid as the Rivian R1T, which is among the few million new pickups sold annually in the United States. With up to 835 horsepower, the R1T can accelerate to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds, which is a few tenths faster than a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. It can also tow up to 11,000 pounds quietly. This upscale outdoor space will seem familiar to anyone who have purchased a tent or hiking boots from REI. A powerful 15.6-inch touchscreen is positioned in the center of the dash, and the chairs have exquisitely stitched leather throughout. EV pickups are a bit of a niche market, but the R1T is not without competition. In this sector, the only other retailers to check out are the GMC Hummer EV SUT, the Chevrolet Silverado EV, and the Ford F-150 Lightning. The Rivian, which has a very useful gear tunnel for extra storage between the truck bed and cabin, does it better than any of the others. Its EPA-estimated range of up to 410 miles is beautifully complemented by its maximum DC fast charging rate of 220 kW. The R1T is among the most competent EVs ever when off-road prowess is included, which is why it made our list of 2024 Editors' Picks.

What Is 2024 Bringing?

In 2024, a performance version of the R1T pickup will be released, with a less costly two-motor drivetrain. Similar to an active dashcam, a new device Cam function lets you record footage for the duration of a journey on a USB-C device. The 12-volt outlets in the cabin and the trunk have the same tale as the driver-facing camera, which is no longer accessible.

2024 Rivian R1T Dual-Motor Performance Max First Test: Is the High-Capacity Battery Worth The Cost?

The R1T comes with all-wheel drive as standard, but it may be ordered in two other configurations: dual or quad motor. 533 horsepower is produced by the Dual-Motor variant with only two motors installed. 700 pound-feet of torque and 665 horsepower are available with a Performance Dual-Motor arrangement. The R1T has up to 835 horsepower when equipped with the optional Quad-Motor system. This model is the fastest pickup truck we've tested to far, reaching 60 mph in only 3.0 seconds on our test track. The Dual-Motor variant does not significantly sacrifice speed, reaching 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. The typical feature is an air suspension system that allows for eight to fourteen inches of ground clearance. Our first test drive in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado demonstrated the R1T's formidable off-road prowess in addition to its agile on-road handling.

Capacity For Payload And Towing

According to Rivian, each R1T has an 11,000-pound towing capability and a 1760-pound payload capacity. It should come as no surprise, however, that pulling a trailer would drain the battery far faster than driving a vehicle without a load, thus purchasers who want to use the truck's towing capability should get the model with the biggest battery pack when it becomes available. We tested our R1T's towing capability by pulling a 6100-pound double-axle camping trailer, which limited its range to just 110 miles at 70 mph.

Battery Life, Charging Time, And Range

The R1T is available with three different battery packs until 2024. The Large and Max battery packs have driving ranges of up to 352 and 410 miles, respectively, while the Standard pack is supposed to last for 270 miles on a single charge. Our Quad-Motor test car, equipped with the Large battery and 20-inch all-terrain tires, only managed to offer 220 miles of range on our real-world highway trip at 75 mph. A second R1T Quad-Motor with the Large battery was tested and found to have a 280-mile range while using 22-inch all-season street tires. The Dual-Motor with the Large battery also yielded the same results.

Fuel Efficiency And Actual MPG

The Quad-Motor R1T has fuel efficiency ratings of 74 mpg in the city, 66 mpg on the highway, and 70 mpg overall. Our test car only averaged 35 MPGe while we were using the R1T, which included considerable towing. Visit the EPA website to learn more about the R1T's fuel efficiency.

2024 Rivian R1S Review, Pricing, and Specs

The inside of the R1T is tastefully decorated with leather, wood, and sizable screens for the infotainment system and instrument cluster. The R1T has a sizable storage space behind the cab (but in front of the bed), a lockable in-bed compartment, and a spacious trunk under the front hood. According to Rivian, the truck's overall lockable storage capacity is 12 cubic feet. The truck's foldable and extensible crossbar system makes it possible to install equipment above the cabin and bed. The bed has an air compressor and three 110-volt outlets.

Features For Safety And Driver Assistance

According to Rivian, all models will come with the Driver+ suite of hands-free driving assistance technologies. Visit the websites of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for further details on the R1T's crash test results. Important safety characteristics consist of:

  • Typical automatic braking in an emergency

  • Normal lane-departure alert

  • Adaptive cruise control standard
